Extension University Hospital

Halle Kröllwitz

1.000 beds; 20 operation units;

Investment approx. 400.000.000 USD

The specific challenge was to connect and integrate the existing East German buildings from the 70s and 80s. The new university hospital develops it comb-like structure south of the existing structure, following the main road. The treatment & examination buildings are identified as independent bodies. They are arranged as a flight of stairs down the hill according to the topography to the east. This creates a new order clearly understandable for patients and staff.

The high proportion of rooms sharing the facades allows a direct view, connection to the landscape, and thus an easy orientation. The connection to the outside supplies workplace and bedrooms with pleasant daylight.

The main characteristics of the entire construction are the modest height of 4 stories, the distinctive structure of the volumes, and the integration into the landscape. The 4 story high main hallway connects old and new buildings.

Research facilities (3000m²) are subdivided into 18 modules. These are interdisciplinary research areas, which can be adapted to the needs of the temporally limited projects. The laboratories with security level S1 and S2, according to gene-technology security regulations, are located here. The building also houses a fully equipped radio nuclide laboratory.

The pillar grid of 7,20 m x 7,20 m is constructively, functionally and economically elaborated and is the base for flexible room arrangement. Beyond the main structure, secondary and tertiary structures can easily be replaced for later use.
