In constant communication with engineers in the field of hospital construction, Georg Potthoff and I found the need to improve the quality and process of building construction projects.
We decided to revamp the communication process between architects and specialist planners in close cooperation. The basis for this is a serial project, on which we work together.

Together with a selected team of experts, we developed a sustainable and economically priced hospital concept for the majority world. In the USA, this concept has already won the Honour Award and the Award of Excellence from the American Institute of Architects. With innovative materials and the application of renewable energy sources, we can guarantee a 24/7 operation with reduced running costs. This alternative examination and care concept facilitates a higher flow of patients without any loss in quality of care.
Intelligent low-tech architecture allows us to integrate infection-control economically into the operation. It is our aim to accompany the project from development to operation holistically. A hospital for rural areas can only reach its full potential if we ensure that the building can operate independently for many years.

Many houses is not enough to make a city. Unfortunately there are many case studies all over the world where this theoretical knowledge is lost in the execution. Unthoughtful construction can lead to a dysfunctional, or even abandoned city. Urban planning and development involve much more than layering levels of infrastructure and building houses on top.
While these building blocks are essential and they require a high amount of interdisciplinary planning, building a truly sustainable, resource saving, livable city requires expertise and much deeper thinking. With strong and experienced partners like TRANSSOLAR, COBE and many other leading experts of their respective fields, we are in the fortunate position to bring together the very best.
Managing Director
at SSP
Stuttgart
2013 - 2014
Selling the TMK Group to HDR initiated a new era within the company. Intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange became the foundation of many projects in Germany and abroad. We facilitated the integration of BIM Technology and close intercultural contact with the Anglo-American part of the company. In cooperation with the London Office, SSP succeeded in developing a State of the Art laboratory building in Munich, which constitutes a milestone for diabetes research. Offering a new office concept fostered exchange between scientists. Specialised, clear, and well-arranged lab areas offer an ideal working environment for each individual research group.
In Stuttgart, in cooperation with HDR, intensive and complex preparations began to enter the application procedure for the construction of the US Clinical Centre in Landstuhl. On this foundation the company won the contract in 2015.
Cooperation from TMK with
HDR Architecture
Alexandria, Virginia
2008 - 2010
One of the highlights during my time as managing director of TMK Stuttgart was the cooperation with Jim Draheim from HDR. We acquired various projects and worked together on international tasks. Today, Jim Draheim is a shareholder at Pansanté and developed the Sustainable Hospital with an international team of excellent architects and engineers.
Managing Director
TMK Architects + Engineers
Berlin & Stuttgart
2001 - 2013
After having finished our flagship project for the largest private hospital chain in Germany, the Clinical Centre in Berlin Buch, I was in charge of founding a new office from scratch for TMK in Stuttgart. After 5 years I had a stable annual turnover of €3,- mil. Our team generated about 15% of the corporation's revenue, and won four first prizes and contracts for large-scale-projects. During this period we worked on a total building volume of about 2.5 million sqft GFA with a total of €550 mil. construction costs.
For the firm we pioneered the latest CAD technology and introduced Building Information Modelling. Where research is concerned, I was able to organise an international healthcare architecture exchange between TMK Stuttgart and HDR Alexandria, VA. This continues to have immense impact on projects and the approach of both offices and engineering teams.
Senior Project Manager
HascherJehle Architecture
Berlin
1998 - 2001
My main work was the project management of the University Hospital Halle. The main emphasis was on project organisation, project budgeting, drawing up frameworks of deadlines as well as coordinating the realisation planning. I was in charge of the facade design.
I was also in charge of project evaluation, and developed controlling data for present and future projects. On this I worked independently and creatively. Simultaneously, I developed a key of economic efficiency in comparison to the HOAI (German Payment Regulations).
Project Manager
Hans Nickl Architects
Munich
1990 - 1996
My main tasks were the elaboration of the facades for the hospital Agatharied, I managed this part of the project through the assigned production phases: preliminary design, design and elaboration of the HU-Bau (financial permission for public buildings), realisation, and direction.
Together with my team I worked in a position of responsibility on different competitions, as well as on the preliminary designs for hospital Selb and the paediatric clinic in Weiden. The firm emphasised my achievements in developing innovative facade concepts for the hospital Agatharied, as well as the elaboration of an intelligent building concept in harmony with architecture and M&E.
Foreign Practice Experience
Gillibrand Architects
Lancaster, Great Britain
Summer 1990 & 1991
In a small sophisticated office near Lancaster, owner Nick had just moved from London to his home region and was working to improve the region and architecture. Prince Charles book "A Vision of Britain" was being discussed very controversially in architecture circles at the time.
In the most well-organised office I’d ever seen, I met Chris Dawson who was part of the team of Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano when they built the Centre Pompidou in Paris. I had the opportunity to see pictures, plans, and inside materials, feeling myself in architectural heaven.
Foreign Practice Experience
Friesen Tokar Architects
Winnipeg, Canada
1987
Friesen Tokar is still a very well known office in the health sector. In 1968 Rudy Friesen took part in a one-year exchange with an architectural office in Stuttgart, and 20 years later he offered me the opportunity to do the same in Winnipeg. I experienced how the planning culture in North America was different from Germany, and was excited by the different strengths in both systems.
