In order to get decisive advantages where flexibility and the relation of individual areas are concerned the present form was developed. A 4-story glass-roofed atrium is the centre of each of the 5 patient wings and the slightly bigger examination & treatment unit in the south.
This kind of floor-plan arrangement replaces the classical comb-shaped conception. Thus the best chaining and interconnection of the functional sectors is provided. This is a good way to use multifunctional units in the out-patient department and the caring units. Because of the square shapes, the option exists to convert and re-equip the patient wings according to future demands with minimal disruption.
The purpose of the architecture is to gain a high degree of flexibility in bed numbers and structures. The useable floorspace of each block (ca. 1.100 m2) facilitates the assembly of individual units considering the limits of authorised fire sections.
The entire design produces a minimum amount of escape-staircases and fire-sections, which results in high cost-reductions without sacrificing safety. We believe this new typology serves the specific external requirements of Berlin-Buch as well as the internal standards of any modern hospital business now and in the future.
